The story of El Mejor
El Mejor is identified among the cigar labels made by the factories of Cuban-born tobacco grower and cigar maker Nestor Plasencia Sr.
The Plasencia family remained closely involved in Central American tobacco after leaving Cuba following the 1959 Cuban Revolution. Its operations grew across Honduras and Nicaragua, including factories in Danlí, Ocotal and Estelí and smaller units in El Paraíso and Morocelí.
El Mejor’s named lines in the supplied record are Emerald and Espresso. No founding date or separate company history for the brand is stated.
How they make them
The supplied record does not identify El Mejor’s particular leaf, ageing, rolling or quality-control methods. It places production with Plasencia, whose factories made cigars for more than 30 labels. During the mid-1990s, about 70 percent of the tobacco used across Plasencia-made cigars came from the family’s Honduran and Nicaraguan fields, where both Connecticut-seed and Cuban-seed tobacco was grown; the remainder was purchased on the market.
