The story of Ramon Allones
Brothers Ramón and Antonio Allones created the brand in Cuba in 1845. They were unrelated to the Antonio Allones associated with El Rey del Mundo. The marque is said to have pioneered colored lithographs for box art, cigar bands and the layered “8-9-8” box arrangement, although rival claims exist for the first two innovations.
After numerous changes of ownership, Ramón Allones was acquired by the Cifuentes family. Production moved to the Partagás Factory, where the Cuban cigars continue to be made.
On September 15, 1960, Cuba’s revolutionary government nationalised cigar manufacturing, including the Partagás Factory. Ramón Allones was retained for production and continued to be manufactured in Havana for the state-owned Habanos SA.
After Altadis bought a controlling share of Habanos SA in 2001, most Ramón Allones sizes were discontinued, including the Coronas and the 8-9-8. The remaining line included the Gigantes, Small Club Corona and Specially Selected, while regional and limited editions extended the marque into individual markets. A separate Ramón Allones brand is produced in Honduras for General Cigar Company.
